豊臣氏 | Toyotomi Clan The Toyotomi Clan (豊臣氏) was one of the most influential samurai families during Japan’s Sengoku (Warring States) period in the 16th century. The clan rose to prominence under the leadership of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a man of humble origins who ascended from a peasant background to become the unifier of Japan. After the death of his lord, Oda Nobunaga, Hideyoshi took control of the remaining forces and succeeded in bringing much of Japan under centralized rule. Toyotomi Hideyoshi is renowned not only for his military conquests but also for his sweeping social and economic reforms that laid the foundation for the Edo period. His "sword hunt" policy disarmed the peasantry to reduce uprisings, and through national land surveys and population registries, he implemented a rigid social class system separating samurai, farmers, artisans, and merchants.
