𝕻𝖗𝖊𝖚𝖘𝖘𝖎𝖘𝖈𝖍𝖊 𝕻𝖔𝖑𝖎𝖟𝖊𝖎 In the 19th century, the German states generally had municipal police forces in large cities, gendarmes seconded to towns, municipalities and rural districts, and the state police . The job title of criminal inspector was introduced in Berlin as early as 1820. On 23 June 1848, King Frederick William IV ordered the founding of the Royal Protection Force in Berlin. This protection force is still regarded today as the forerunner of the modern police.
