Description
The "Legio I Flavia Gallicana Constantia" is a legion created by Constantius Chlorus in the late 3rd century. It was created from the old Cohors I Gallica Civium Romanourm Equitata which consisted of Gauls. Later recruitment would happen in the Diocese of Gaul and the province of Gallia Lugdunensis Secunda. It was quartered in the province of Belgica belonging to the mobile army of Gaul, to protect the coasts of Brittany under the command of a Prefect. By beginning of the 5th century, it is part of the Western army as a legiones pseudocomitatensis stationed in Coutances in the province of Gallia Lugdunensis Tertia. In the 4th century they gave a detachment to form a new unit, the Milites Primae Flaviae, stationed at Coutances under a prefect to protect against the frequent barbarian incursions. The full legion would remain here for most of its existence, moving in the campaigns of various emperors. The legion would exist until the 5th century when it was destroyed.
