Celtae #35620331
Description
The "Celtae" one of the first auxilia palatina units part of the initial batch; created by Constantius Chlorus. It was recruited in Northern Gaul, Eastern Gaul, and extreme northeastern Gaul, from either recruited Gauls or Gauls who volunteered to join the army that came from the country of province and not the cities. Later recruitment would continue to happen locally from Gallic dediticii plus some Franks (most likely Salians from Overijssel and Gelderland in the Netherlands) settled as laeti in the province, with Italians joining when it was station in Italy. It was stationed in the Diocese of Gaul and is still seen there later on. The unit would be sent East at various points, namely for the battle of Adrianople in 378 AD where they were almost destroyed. Afterwards they were split into a senior and a junior unit, with this senior unit being sent back west. From 395 AD, they are stationed in Italy. The unit would continue exist until the 5th century when it was destroyed.
