Description
In 1809, the Duchy of Warsaw emerged as a significant military force during the Peninsular War, a conflict that was part of the broader Napoleonic Wars. Established from the territories of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the duchy was a client state of the French Empire, and its army was heavily influenced by French military organization and tactics. The army comprised approximately 40,000 troops, largely consisting of infantry, cavalry, and artillery units, reflecting a blend of national pride and the revolutionary fervour of the era. Soldiers were often motivated by a desire for Polish independence and the restoration of their homeland, which had been partitioned in the late 18th century. The military structure emphasized rapid manoeuvrability and effective use of artillery, with many officers trained in the Napoleonic style. The army participated actively alongside French forces, notably in campaigns against the Spanish and Portuguese.
