- Cohortes Urbanae - The Cohortes Urbanae (Urban Cohorts) were a military force established by Augustus in the late 1st century BCE to maintain public order in Rome and other major cities of the empire. They were essentially riot police and internal security forces, distinct from both the Praetorian Guard and the Vigiles (firefighters and night watchmen).
