Description
The Order of Saint Clare, also known as the Poor Clares, is a contemplative religious order founded by Saint Clare of Assisi in the early 13th century. Dedicated to a life of poverty, humility, and prayer, the Poor Clares follow the example of their founder in seeking to live the Gospel in its most radical form, devoting themselves entirely to God and to prayer for the world. Saint Clare, a close companion of Saint Francis of Assisi, established the order in 1212 as a response to the call for a life of radical poverty and devotion. Their vow of poverty is central to their way of life, as the sisters live without personal possessions, relying completely on God’s providence. The Poor Clares are known for their deep commitment to a life of prayer, especially the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and their role as intercessors for the needs of the Church and the world.
