From their ancestral seat at Sunspear, a formidable fortress on the southern coast that gazes over the arid dunes of Dorne, House Martell has governed the region with absolute authority for centuries. Unlike the other Great Houses of Westeros, House Martell was never fully subdued by House Targaryen during Aegon’s Conquest of the Seven Kingdoms. House Martell mounted a resolute resistance against the forces of Aegon the Conqueror, and after years of prolonged conflict, they secured a treaty with the Targaryen dynasty that guaranteed Dorne’s autonomy. In the aftermath of this peace, House Martell had cultivated a military force that is adept in both offensive and defensive stratagems.
