Description
The Nasiri Battalion was formed in 1816 after the Anglo-Nepali War. The war was a Company victory, and the disputed territory of Tarai was handed over to the British. The British, however, were so amazed by how well the Gurkhas fought, and so decided to give them a job in the Company's army. As part of the Treaty of Sugauli, the HEIC would be permitted to recruit gurkhas into their army. And so, the very first Gurkha unit, the Nasiri Battalion, was formed for the Bengal Army. The Gurkha Rifles that exist in the modern British, Indian, and Nepali armies are widely regarded as the most elite fighting forces in the world. The single battalion did not start as a rifle unit, however they were later were dubbed the role of light infantry and given rifles. The battalion served at the famed Siege of Bharatpur in 1825 and the Battle of Aliwal in 1846. The regiment became apart of the 1st Gorkha Rifles and under that title saw service in World War I.
