เมืองสองแควคือเมืองพิษณุโลกในปัจจุบัน เป็นเมืองที่มีประวัติศาสตร์ยาวนานมาตั้งแต่สมัยขอม คำว่าสองแควมาจากที่ตั้งของเมืองซึ่งอยู่ระหว่างแม่น้ำสองสาย คือแม่น้ำน่านกับแม่น้ำแควน้อย ต่อมาสมัยอยุธยาสมเด็จพระบรมไตรโลกนาถทรงสร้างเมืองใหม่บริเวณเมืองสองแควและเมืองชัยนาท ขนานนามว่า เมืองพิษณุโลกสองแคว โดยทรงหมายมั่นให้เป็นราชธานีฝ่ายเหนือคู่กับกรุงเทพทวารวดีศรีอยุธยา เมืองพิษณุโลกในสมัยอยุธยามีความสำคัญยิ่งทางด้านการเมืองการปกครอง ยุทธศาสตร์ เศรษฐกิจ ศาสนา ศิลปวัฒนธรรม และด้านการศาสนาก็ไม่ได้ถูกละเลย เห็นได้จากโบราณสถานโบราณวัตถุที่ตกทอดมายุคปัจจุบันล้วนเป็นศิลปะสมัยอยุธยา หรือได้รับการบูรณะในช่วงเวลานั้น ยุคนี้จึงถือเป็นยุคทองของเมืองสองแควหรือพิษณุโลกอย่างแท้จริง
