Description

The Austrian military establishment, tested in the conflicts of 1795 and 1798, had been defeated by France on these occasions, prompting much-needed reforms to be undertaken. This would be led by Archduke Charles, who, from late 1801, began a series of changes improving army procurement, accounting practices, medical care, and service length. These reforms would, however, be interrupted in 1805 by the upcoming war with France, as the preparations for war were entrusted to General Mack. The conclusion of the Third Coalition would put Archduke Charles in favor as he had engaged in a fairly successful campaign in Italy as opposed to Mack, who had been humiliated in Napoleon's German campaign. It would be from here that the Archduke could undertake important reforms sidelined due to the conflict, such as abolishing excessive paperwork duties and corporal punishments.
