The Luka Melaka community is set in the turbulent 16th century, during the fierce struggle for control over the Straits of Malacca. This era was marked by the Triangular War between Aceh, the Portuguese, and Johor, as well as other Malay states that sought dominance over the vital trade routes of the region. After the fall of Malacca to the Portuguese in 1511, the city became a battleground for rival powers. The Sultanate of Aceh, rising as a formidable Islamic maritime empire, launched relentless attacks on Portuguese Malacca with support from the Ottoman Empire. At the same time, Johor, founded by the exiled rulers of Malacca, engaged in both cooperation and conflict with the Portuguese, depending on shifting alliances. The war saw massive naval battles, political betrayals, and shifting allegiances, with Aceh striving to expel the Portuguese, Johor vying for control over Malacca, and the Portuguese defending their colonial foothold.
