Fundado em 1812, o Regimento de Artilharia nº 4 tinha como principal função o apoio de fogo às tropas imperiais, utilizando peças de artilharia para neutralizar posições inimigas, defender fortalezas e garantir superioridade militar em confrontos armados. A artilharia era considerada uma arma técnica e estratégica, exigindo elevado conhecimento matemático, mecânico e disciplinar de seus oficiais e praças. O dever do regimento era preparar o terreno para o avanço da infantaria e proteger posições defensivas contra ameaças externas. Sua importância residia no poder destrutivo e psicológico de seus canhões, capazes de decidir batalhas antes mesmo do combate direto. O Regimento de Artilharia nº 4 simbolizava o avanço tecnológico e a modernização do Exército Português no final do século XIX.
