Description
In the late 1800s, colonial settlement expanded into the Ensford area. Without consent or treaty, large portions of Salmon River First Nation territory were claimed for logging, rail development, and later the townsite of Ensford. A small reserve was established, while the remainder of the Nation’s traditional lands were absorbed into municipal boundaries. Fishing restrictions, residential schooling, and policing disrupted traditional governance and culture. Despite this, families quietly maintained fishing sites, burial grounds, and cultural practices along the river.
