Description
The New Zealand Ministry of Justice (Te Tāhū o te Ture) is the government department responsible for supporting the justice system, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring fair access to justice for all New Zealanders. It provides policy advice to the government on legal, constitutional, and justice-related matters, manages the court system, administers tribunals, and supports judges, coroners, and the wider judiciary. The Ministry oversees key areas such as criminal and civil law, family law, human rights, privacy, electoral law, and constitutional affairs, including the relationship between the Crown and Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi. It is also responsible for collecting and enforcing fines, providing legal aid to those who cannot afford representation, and ensuring victims of crime receive the assistance and compensation they are entitled to.
