Description
The State is ruled by two hereditary Kings, the Agiad and Eurypontid Dynasties. Both families descended from Herakles and are equal in authority so that one can not act against the other. According to Herodotus, the Eurypontid family is older and more virtuous than the Agiad. The duties of the Diarchy are primarily religious, judicial, and militaristic. As the chief priests of State, the Kings perform acts of sacrifice and commune with the Oracle. In times of trial, the Kings will act in accordance with the Ephorate to decide the fate of the one being tried. In times of war, the Diarchy will lead the Lakonian forces into battle. As of late the Eurypontid Dynasty has been forced into lower positions with the Leonidas Dynasty taking their place.
