Description
Halifax, Nova Scotia, was founded in 1749 as a British naval and military outpost meant to secure control of the North Atlantic. Its deep, ice-free harbour quickly made it a busy center for trade, shipbuilding, and maritime activity. Throughout the 19th century, the city developed around its defenses—most notably the Citadel—while growing into an important commercial port. In the 20th century, Pier 21 became a major gateway for newcomers arriving in Canada, shaping the city’s cultural landscape. Halifax played vital roles in both World Wars as a key convoy point. The 1917 Halifax Explosion devastated large parts of the city, but the rebuilding that followed helped modernize and reshape its urban core. Today, Halifax combines its longstanding maritime heritage with a thriving cultural scene, strong academic institutions, and a steadily expanding economy.
