Description

The Equites Catafractarii Ambianenses is a vexillationes comitatenses created by Diocletian. It was raised from Sarmatian laeti settled in the uncultivated plains of Gaul. They came from the Pontic Steppe, a region encompassed by the Northern Black Sea region in Ukraine, the Southern Federal District in Russia, and the West Kazakstan region in Kazakstan. Later recruitment would happen in Amiens and the surrounding area in Gaul and Belgium; before switching to Thrace and then to Asia Minor. They were first stationed at Amiens, joining Constantine I's campaigns which united the empire, and participating at the battle of Strasbourg in 357 AD. It would remain at Amiens until the Constantius II transferred it to Adrianople in Thrace. By the 5th century they were under the Magister Militum Praesentalis II, stationed in Asia Minor performing coastal surveillance. It existed until sometime in the 5th century when it was disbanded or destroyed.
