Description

The Scythae were created by the Tetrarchy. It was created from a detachment of Legio IV Scythica which had men from mostly Eastern Asia Minor and northern Syria, while the rest came from elsewhere in Asia Minor; Legio I Iovia Scythica which had men from Scythia Minor; or Legio II Herculia which had men from Scythia Minor. Regular recruitment would happen in the province of Scythia Minor until switching to Egypt. It was initially in the province of Scythia Minor, then becoming part of the army of the East where it was a legiones palatinae and considered one of the best legions there. At the beginning of the 6th century it was in the Thebaid region of Egypt, remaining there until 536 AD when it left to fight in Italy. Here it would escape Justinian's disbanding of the legions. It would then return to Egypt by 539 AD appearing in the vicinity of Apollinopolis Magna/Edfu. In 638 AD the legion is seen again as the Banda of the Scythae. They would exist until the Arab conquest.
