Description

The Matiarii later Matiarii Seniores was raised by Diolcetian. It was created from mobile detachments from the Praetorian Guard which had men from the Balkan and Danube provinces and Central Italy; and Legio II Parthica which had men from Macedonia, Thrace, Illyria, Pannonia, and Italy. Regular recruitment would happen in the Illyrian and southern Balkan-Danube provinces, later switching to Asia Minor. They are armed with Mattiobarbuli lead-weighted throwing darts. They first stationed the Illyrian provinces and part of the mobile army. In 360 AD they proclaimed Julian II in Paris, being the vanguard in his Persian campaign of 363 AD. In 364 AD it was split, the senior unit being assigned to the West; though soon sent to the East taking part in the battle of Adrianople in 378 AD. By the 5th century it is a legio palatina in the Diocese of the East under the command of the Magister Militum Praesentalis II stationed in Asia Minor. They would continue to exist until the mid-6th century
