Led by two consuls and supported by a powerful Senate, Rome had already unified much of Italy. The Punic Wars were fought against Carthage, a wealthy maritime rival, and marked Rome’s rise as a dominant Mediterranean power. Key events included Hannibal’s invasion during the Second Punic War and the final destruction of Carthage in the Third.
