Description
The Comites Dominorum Nostrorum later the Comites Seniores is a vexillationes palatinae created by Diocletian in 295 AD. It was created with part of the Equites Singularis Augusti which had men from the Danube and Balkan provinces and Batavia; and Danubian legionaries. As an elite unit recruitment would happen from the warlike Thracians and probably also from the Western provinces; while later recruitment happened in Italy. The term comites means companions, as in the companions-in-arms of the emperor. In 295 AD it followed Diocletian to Egypt later accompanying Galerius to Italy in 307 AD, then joining Constantine the Great in Italy taking part in the battle of Milvian Bridge in 312 AD. It later became part of the Magistri's Equitum of the West's personal guard; being the most senior cavalry unit of the West and having no station. From 395 AD it was in Italy under the command of the Comies Italiae. It would exist until the 5th century when it was destroyed.
