Description

The Equites Promoti Dominorum Nostrorum later the Equites Promoti Seniores was raised in 293 AD. It was created with the cavalry of the Praetorian Guard with men from the Balkan and Danube provinces and Italy. Recruitment would happen in Thrace and probably the Western provinces and later Italy. During Galerius' time most were Carpi from western Moldovia, northeastern Romania, and western Ukraine and Sarmatians from Northern Black Sea region in Ukraine, the Southern Federal District in Russia, and West Kazakstan. It first served in Egypt and Persia then moving to Thessalonica where it remained until it moved to join Constantine the Great in Italy. It served at a battle near Lake Constance in 355 AD and was later sent East where it took part in the battle of Adrianople. In around 364 AD it was split with the senior unit being part of the West.
