Description

The Academic Choir BYZANTION was founded in July 2024 as the Psaltic Group “St. Hierarch Andrew the Cretan,” with the blessing of His Grace Bartholomew, then Bishop-Vicar of the Vicariate of Crete. Initially belonging to the “Holy Great Martyr Demetrius the Myrrh-Gusher” Monastery in Crete, the group performed authentic Byzantine chant. Created at the initiative of Father Daniel Iftimie and the clergy of the vicariate, it sought to enrich the community’s spiritual life. After the vicariate’s dissolution and a brief pause, the members reunited in October 2024 under the name “Macarie Hieromonk,” honoring the innovator of Romanian psaltic music, Macarie Protopsaltos. In May 2025 the ensemble became the Academic Choir BYZANTHEOS, later renamed the Academic Choir BYZANTION. The choir now functions in Iași, Romania, with the blessing of His Beatitude Ilie and under the auspices of the Social-Philanthropic Department of the Romanian Patriarchate.
