Divitenses #36032997
Description
The Divitenses later the Divitenses Seniores was raised by Diocletian. It was created from a detachment of Legio II Italica Pia Fidelis Divitensium which had men from the Roman communities and areas of military occupation including their immediate hinterlands in Noricum Ripense. Regular recruitment would happen locally around Deutz Castle in Germania Secunda; with this changing to Gaul and then Italy. It first garrisoned Deutz across from Cologne, being added to the mobile army by Constantine the Great. They would take part in the fight against Maxentius and later the Gallic and Persian campaigns of Julian I. In 364 AD, it was split in two, with the senior legion remaining in the West. From January 365 AD it was stationed in Gaul and in 366 AD Chalon-Sur-Saone in the province of Gallia Lugdunensis Prima. By 395 AD it was a legio palatina in Italy under the command of the Magister Peditum Occidentis. The legion would exist until the late 5th century when it was destroyed.
