Cambridgе Police Department #36033198

Description
The Cambridge Police Department's origin dates back to 1852 as a security service for the city's executive officials. With rising crime and expanding bootlegging routes across the region, the security service was formalized into the East Metro District Police in 1860—a joint department tasked with maintaining order in Cambridge and neighboring towns, an effort aimed at curbing the rise of textile smuggling. Corruption within Cambridge's executive branch and growing tensions with officials of nearby towns led to the East Metro District Police's dissolution in early 1863. Recognizing the need for a stable and centralized law enforcement presence, Cambridge restructured its policing efforts, officially forming the Cambridge Police Department later that year. Since its inception, the department has stood as the city’s principal authority on public safety and justice, adapting through decades of challenges to serve and protect its residents.
