Description

Originally established in 1813, the village of Gafton began as a modest but thriving mining community, home to approximately 179 residents. To maintain order and safety, the Gafton Village Council soon founded the Gafton Village Police Department. Following the Civil War, Gafton faced a rapid decline. By 1866, the village was abandoned as its natural resources had been exhausted. However, in 1872, residents from the neighboring city of Theodore Heights resettled the area, breathing new life into the deserted village. Recognizing its renewed vitality and growing population, the County of Monroe officially re-established the settlement in 1878 as the Township of Portwell. With a population surpassing 1,000 residents, the Portwell Township Council created the Portwell Township Police Department to help preserve peace and order in the flourishing township. Today, the department is budgeted at 50 sworn police officers and serves as local law enforcement agency for the Township of Portwell.
