The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is one of the most prominent and well-known law enforcement agencies in the United States and around the world. Established in 1869, the LAPD serves the City of Los Angeles, California—a sprawling and diverse metropolis that is home to nearly four million residents. With a jurisdiction covering approximately 468 square miles, the department is responsible for maintaining public safety, enforcing the law, preventing crime, and fostering community trust across a vast and complex urban environment. The LAPD operates under the governance of the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners, a civilian oversight body appointed by the mayor. The Chief of Police, who is also appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the Board, serves as the department’s top executive. As of recent years, the LAPD has employed over 9,000 sworn officers and nearly 3,000 civilian personnel, making it one of the largest municipal police forces in the country.
