Batavi Auxilia Palatina #36057391
Description
The Batavi later Batavi Seniores was raised by Constantius Chlorus in 298 AD. It was created from the Cohors I Batavorum Milliaria Equitata Civium Romanorum Pia Fidelis which had men from the region of Batavia, Canannefates from South Holland, and Frisians from Holland/Frisia plus some Dacians and Macedonians; as well as Salian Franks (from Salland in Overijssel, the IJssel River area in Gelderland, coastal North Holland). Later recruitment happened from Salian Franks for a time, though shifted to happen in Gaul and then Italy. They first garrisoned Brigetio, soon being sent to Gaul. They would be present at a battle near Autun in 356 AD, at Strasbourg in 357 AD, and in 360 AD in Britain. In 367 AD they were in Gaul and from 368-369 Britain. Afterwards it was sent East being at the battle of Adrianople. In 377 AD it would be split with the senior unit going back west. By 395 AD it was in Italy under the Comes Italiae. The unit existed until the late 5th century when it was destroyed.
