Equites Batavi #36057875
Description
The Equites Batavi later Equites Batavi Seniores was raised by Chlorus. It was created from the Ala I Batavorum Milliaria Civium Romanorum Pia Fidelis with men from Batavia, Canannefates from South Holland, and Frisii from Holland/Frisia; part of the Equites Singularis with men from Batavia, the Danube and Balkan provinces; Salian Franks from Salland in Overijssel, the Ijssel River area in the Veluwe region of Gelderland, and coastal North Holland; Frisii from Friesland/North Holland; and Chamavi from Hamaland, Achterhoek, and Liemersin in Gelderland. Regular recruitment would happen from Salian Franks, until it shifted to happen in Gaul. As a vexillation palatina it was always in the field army being stationed in Gaul. In 364 AD it was split, with the senior unit remaining in the west. By the 5th century it is still in Gaul under the Maigster Equitum Intra Gallias. The regiment would continue to exist into Merovingian times, last being seen at Besancon at Avranches.
