Livgardet (The Life Guards of Sweden) ------------------------------------------------- Livgardet, the Swedish Life Guards, is the elite royal guard regiment tasked with the protection of the monarch and the royal household. Tracing its lineage back to 1521 under Gustav Vasa, it is one of the oldest active military units in the world. By 1809, the Life Guards stood at the heart of Stockholm, both as a ceremonial guard and as a loyal military force during a time of political crisis and royal upheaval.
