Description

The Cornuti later the Cornuti Seniores was raised by the Tetrarchy. It was recruited from tribesmen and warrior groups (the latter comprised of masked village youths) in Schleswig, Jutland, and elsewhere in Denmark. It was regularly recruited in from these area, later from Gaul then Itay. While in Italy it would see Salian Franks (from Overijessel, Gelderland, and Batavia), Western Heruli (from the area of Dithmarschen and northern Friesland on southwestern coast of Jutland), and Vandals (from the middle and upper reaches of the Danube in Austria and Hungary) added to it. It would first serve on the Danube and in the East, being near Brigetio in 303 AD and then Italy from 311-312 AD. They became part of the field army of Gaul remaining there until 360 AD when they moved to the East. In the 370s AD it was split, the senior unit in 395 AD moving to Italy. In the 5th century it is seen under the Comes Italiae. They would exist until the late 5th century when it was destroyed.
