Description
The Ala I Noricorum Civium Romanorum was raised by Tiberius. It was initially recruited in Noricum and by the mid-1st century still consisted mainly of Noricans the rest from Germania Superior. After 70 AD though, new men came primarily from Gallia Belgica, Thrace, and the two German provinces (in addition to tribesmen from Trier, Cannanefates from South Holland, Rauraci from Basel noted); with only a few from Noricum. During its time in the East in the 160s AD, new recruits were enlisted locally in Armenia/Caucasus. All later recruitment took place in the vicinity of its fort in the border region of Germania Secunda. It was stationed in Mainz moving in 74 AD to Cologne and then to Alt-Kalkar at the beginning of the 2nd century. Under Antoninus Pius it moved to Dormagen where it would remain. It was also took part in the Parthian War of 161-166 AD. It would continue to garrison Dormagen uninterrupted. They would exist until 390 AD when the fort was destroyed.
