Description
The Ala Moesica Felix Torquata Pia Fidelis was raised by Octavian. It was initially recruited from Moesians and Thracians in Moesia. Before 69 AD men from Gallia Belgica would be enlisted alongside Moesians. After 70 AD men from Thrace, Pannonia, and Moesia would begin to be enlisted while enlistment in Gallia Belgica continued. This continued until Trajan's time onwards when local recruitment began to happen locally in the two German provinces as well as from Thracians. It first garrisoned Kaiseraugst where it remained until the reign of Titus when it moved to Asberg, in 90 AD to Okarben and a few years later to Echzell. During the time of Trajan they were moved to Lower Moesia, but did not remain here long returning to Echzell. Then in the middle of the 2nd century they moved to Butzbach where it remained until its fall in the 240s AD. Its next base is unknown, but by 300 AD it was stationed in Deutz where it would remain. The unit would exist until sometime in the 5th century.
