Description

𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠'𝐬 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐺𝑜𝑡𝑡 𝑠𝑐hü𝑡𝑧𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑛 𝐾ö𝑛𝑖𝑔 God Save the King Following the French annexation of Hanover, a possession of King George III, many Germans fled to Britain. In 1803 Colonel Johann Friedrich von der Decken was given a permit to raise the "King's German Regiment" which was later merged with elements of German artillery and cavalry to form the King's German Legion. The legion was argued to be among the most disciplined of the British army and its cavalry accrued a fearsome reputation. After distinguishing itself in the Peninsular War, the Legion would go on to participate in the battle of Waterloo, in which the 5th Line Battalion would halt the French advance at La Haye Sainte.
