Description
First charted in 1564 by Spanish explorer Don Álvaro de Landa, the area—named “El Grave” for its deadly coastline—lay at Baja California’s southern tip. Claimed by Spain but rarely used, it stayed forgotten until 1898, when U.S. forces seized it during the Spanish-American War for its strategic port. Over time, the name softened to Elgrave. During the Great Depression, with no U.S. support, locals declared independence in 1928. The U.S. did not intervene. Elgrave adopted a constitution modeled after the U.S. and focused on self-reliance, boosting fishing and whaling. By WWII’s end, it had recovered. In the late 1960s and ’70s, tourism replaced whaling as the economic driver. Today, in 1981, Elgrave is a wealthy but uneven nation—prosperous in its tourist hubs, yet reliant on its fishing roots.
