𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 The Resistance was a private paramilitary force that opposed the First Order, a military dictatorship that sought to restore the Galactic Empire, that emerged as an unauthorized military movement from the New Republic Defense Force during the Cold War that believed that the First Order posed a serious threat to democracy in the galaxy, unlike the New Republic Senate and High Command. Nevertheless, the New Republic quietly tolerated its activities, while technically being illegal. The Resistance fought against the First Order in a new galactic war, during which time the First Order beheaded the New Republic in a surprise attack in 34 ABY and occupied large swathes of the galaxy. Yet despite the Resistance's initial stand alone, the Resistance inspired rebellion across the galaxy, and a Citizens' Fleet eventually assembled to reinforce the Resistance and spark an uprising against the First Order.
