Description
Selective mutism(SM) is an anxiety disorder characterised by a consistent failure to speak in specific social situations despite speaking in other situations. It’s not a choice; individuals with SM want to speak but are prevented from doing so due to overwhelming anxiety. This condition typically appears before age 5 or after a significant life change and can significantly impact a person’s ability to function in school, social, settings, and other areas of daily life.
