The short-lived nation of the Two Sicilies was the union of two kingdoms, Naples and Sicily, lying under one elaborate power. The country dissolved entirely in 1860 and was annexed by the Kingdom of Sardinia and then the Kingdom of Italy afterward. It worked as a small yet distinctive nation that played a role in unifying the surrounding parts of Italy, which led to a united Italy in 1861.
