1st Regiment of Texas Mounted RifIe Volunteers #403167247
Description
Organized in June and July of 1846 at the outbreak of the war with Mexico, the 1st Regiment of Texas Mounted Rifle Volunteers was composed largely of experienced frontier horsemen and former Texas Rangers. Commanded by Colonel John C. Hays, formerly a Major of a battalion in the service of Texas, the regiment embodied the Republic’s mounted warfare tradition: rapid maneuver, precision rifle fire, and aggressive scouting. Mustered into United States service for the campaign in northern Mexico, the regiment served during the early operations of the conflict before being honorably discharged in September and October of 1846, its term of enlistment complete. The regiment carried forward the hard-earned frontier reputation of Texas mounted troops into federal service.
