Description
The Grenadier Guards, founded in 1656 to serve King Charles II in exile, are the oldest and most senior regiment of Foot Guards in the British Army. Originally formed in Bruges, they gained elite status after the Battle of Waterloo, where they defeated Napoleon's Imperial Guard—earning the unique right to be called "Grenadier" Guards. Their distinctive bearskin caps commemorate this victory. As part of the Household Division, they perform both ceremonial duties—guarding Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, and during state occasions—and serve as battle-ready infantry, having fought in nearly every major British conflict over the past 350 years, including the Crimean War, Boer War, WWI, WWII, Falklands, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Known for extreme discipline and regimental pride, their motto is Honi soit qui mal y pense. The regiment remains a symbol of loyalty, tradition, and elite military excellence.
