Description
The Hōjō Clan was one of the most powerful and influential samurai clans in Japanese history. Rising to prominence during the Kamakura period, the clan became known for its military strength, political power, and disciplined leadership. The Hōjō served as shikken, or regents, to the Kamakura Shogunate, effectively ruling Japan for over a century while maintaining order during times of war and unrest. The clan first gained power through Hōjō Tokimasa and his daughter Hōjō Masako, who was married to Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura Shogunate. After Yoritomo’s death, the Hōjō Clan gradually assumed control of the government and became the true power behind the shogunate. Through strategy, alliances, and military force, the Hōjō secured their influence across Japan and established themselves as one of the dominant clans of the era. The Hōjō are especially remembered for defending Japan against the Mongol invasions of 1274 and 1281. Under Hōjō leadership
