Hark! Fondue, a noble feast of Helvetian birth, is naught but cheese, melted and wedded to wine, set forth within a common vessel. This pot, o’er a humble flame of candle or spirit’d lamp, doth keep the nectar warm. With slender forks of length, companions gather round, to dip their bread, and oft fair herbs or other morsels, into that molten treasure, and thus partake in fellowship most savory. A Declaration of Fondue’s Independence When in the course of human appetite, it becometh necessary for a people to dissolve the lesser bonds of solitary dining, and to assume among the banquets of the earth the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Fellowship and the Rights of Appetite entitle them, a decent respect to the hunger of mankind requireth that they should declare the causes which impel them to the feast.
