Description
Orthodox Church of Amava Chiesa Ortodossa Amava Following the Amavan seizure of extensive Greek territories, the Autocephalous Orthodox Church under Amavan rule was established with a tomos from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, creating the Orthodox Church of Amava. After the Imperial Amavan state collapsed, the Republic formed. The church's Greek and other foreign possessions were lost, resulting in substantial losses. Following Greek independence, the Greek government became hostile to the Amavan church, which then turned to the ROCOR. Today, the church operates under ROCOR's omophorion semi-autonomously, serving its faithful remnants within the Republic. Abbreviation: OCA Type: Semi-Autonomous Classification: Christian Orientation: Russian Orthodoxy Polity: Episcopal Primate: Metropolitan Gennadios Liturgy: Byzantine Rite Headquarters: Cavona Territory: Amava Former Possessions (Imperial): Levant, Egypt, Cyrenaica, Nubia, Abyssinia
