Description
/Hilz·deɪl/ The Hillside Settlement was established on April 5, 1864, primarily used as a Union communication line during the American Civil War. After the conclusion of the Civil War, many men stationed at the settlement returned home, however, few remained there, bringing their belongings and families to the isolated location. The settlement was recognized as an independent territory on September 3, 1959, following the addition of the State of Hawaii. Today, Hillsdale County is still recognized as independent but remains one of the smallest counties within the United States.
