Description
Uncle Rust Thrasher and of his blooded kin, the House of Thrasher, whose name clingeth to the air like soot to stone. In the deep woods they do dwell, where the boughs knot themselves as though in watchful thought, and there standeth their timbered house, bowed with age, its beams groaning in the night as if remembering old oaths. There the fire burneth low and red, and shadows pace the walls when no foot is heard, and Uncle Rust sitteth oft in silence, his gaze cast long, as though he seeth not the hearth before him but some farther hour yet to come. I shall say this much: the woods know them, and the owls call their name without being taught.
