Description
The New Haven County Rescue Squad (NHCRS) began as the New Haven Medical Service in the 1960s, an independent coalition of various hospitals agreeing to unify their ambulance and paramedic services with the county. Following an attempt to centralize all services in the county, the NHCRS was merged and became the NHCFD's EMB. The modern NHCRS is the consolidation of the former New Haven County Fire Department's Emergency Medical Bureau, and the Dalton Hospital Center Emergency Medical Services. Starting in the mid 1970s, members of the NHCFD EMB began to complain about over certification, bureaucracy, and unfair pay towards paramedics under the department. By the early 1980s, talks began with the New Haven County Board to create a countywide emergency medical and rescue squad, which would take over the duties of the EMB and restore the squad to its previous status as its own entity separate of the fire department. Come 1989, the Medical Squad Revival Act came around. We're so back.
