Description
The Corps of Veterans was raised in 1807 from a cadre of unassigned veteran officers from the days of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth who were pressing the authorities to allow them to return to active service with the new Polish Army. Soon the unit expanded to a battalion as ex-soldiers of all ranks patriotically flooded to enlist and took on duties in garrison. In 1812 it was posted to the Russian-Polish border, where the Veterans, supported by the 13th Infantry Regiment, several battalions of the Polish National Guard, and a company of Lithuanian riflemen, crossed the River Bug.
