Description
PRINCIPALITY OF NOVGOROD Novgorod is widely praised for being the cradle of the Rus' state, with the city being a major economic hub for the Rus'. Stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Volga River, Novgorod meant "New City" in Old East Slavic, and was referred to as a staging trading post and city from the Baltic Sea to the Byzantine Empire, with "Novgorod the Great" being the common epithet for the prominent city.
