Description
Mission control centers (MCC) are facilities that manage space flights, usually from the point of launch until landing or the end of the mission. They are part of the ground segment of spacecraft operations. A staff of flight controllers and other support personnel monitor all aspects of missions using telemetry, and send commands to the vehicle using ground stations. Personnel supporting missions from an MCC can include representatives of the attitude control system, power, propulsion, thermal, attitude dynamics, orbital operations and other subsystem disciplines. Training for these missions usually falls under the responsibility of the flight controllers, and typically includes extensive rehearsals in the MCC. There are two main MCC's in NASA, the Launch Control Center at Kennedy Space Center and the (formerly) Integrated Mission Control Center, also known by its call-sign as "Houston," at the LBJ Space Center in Houston, Texas.
